- The United Kingdom dispatched a relatively low-level diplomat to engage in talks with Soviet Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Molotov instead of sending Lord Halifax. Molotov took this as a sign that Britain was not seriously interested in forming friendly relations with the Soviet Union. ww2dbase [Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact | CPC]
- Japanese blockaded the British concession in Tianjin, China. ww2dbase [Tianjin Incident | Tianjin | CPC]
- The German elite infantry regiment Grossdeutschland was created. The 1st Battalion was made up from elements from the Wach Regiment (the Berlin ceremonial Guard Regiment) and consisted of three rifle companies, a machine gun company and a heavy weapons company. The 2nd Battalion was formed from men from the 92nd Infantry Regiment (with the same organisation as the 1st Battalion). The 3rd and 4th Battalions were formed from men from the Infantry Instruction Regiment (the 3rd with a similar organisation as the 1st, the 4th comprised a light infantry gun company, an anti-tank company and a heavy infantry gun company). In Jul 1940 a fifth Battalion was added to the establishment made up of a motor cycle company, and one company each of pioneers, signals and anti-aircraft. ww2dbase [AC]
