  • HMS Pink (Commander G. V. Legassick) was hit by a torpedo fired from the German submarine U-988 off the Normandy beaches, France, and was so badly damaged that she was declared as a constructive total loss. ww2dbase [AC]

  • In France, US troops captured Cherbourg while British forces took Hill 112 near Caen.   • British bombers attacked San Marino, killing 35. ww2dbase [CPC]
United Kingdom
  • 53 V-1 flying bombs were launched against the ports of Southampton and Portsmouth in southern Britain but had little effect and the order was rescinded the next day. One of the first V-1 bombs that failed to explode came down at a farm outside Newington providing information on its construction and propulsion.
