  • Despite being outgunned Captain Howard Kelly on the British light cruiser HMS Gloucester opened fire on the German cruiser Breslau in order to delay the flight of the battlecruiser Goebern (Rear Admiral W. Souchon) to enable the pursuing British battlecruisers, under the flag of Admiral Sir Berkeley Milne, to catch up with their prey. The engagement had to be called off when the Gloucester ran short of coal. ww2dbase [AC]
