- Serious incidents of fighting occurred in the streets of Berlin, Germany, between the Freikorps and the Leibknecht's Spartacists. The forces of the left were defeated.

- General Nobuyuki Abe was named the commanding officer of the Taiwan Army.
9 Jan 1939
- Italian Royal Decree No. 70 was issued to make Italian Libya within the metropolitan territory of Italy, thus lifting the region's status from a mere colony to a part of the Italian Empire.
9 Jan 1940
- Three merchantmen in the North Sea were sunk by German bombers.
- British submarine Starfish attacked German minesweeper M-7 off Helgoland, but the torpedoes misfired. M-7 counterattacked with depth charges for hours, causing damage. At 1820 hours, Lieutenant Thomas Turner of Starfish ordered the submarine to surface and surrendered. This loss led to the Royal Navy's decision to suspend submarine operations in Belgoland Bight.
- British liner SS Dunbar Castle hit a naval mine and sank off Ramsgate in southeastern England, United Kingdom. 9 were killed immediately, including the captain. Chief Officer Herbert Robinson of Dunbar Castle was later awarded the Order of the British Empire for evacuating 189 survivors.
- German submarine U-19 torpedoed and sank Norwegian merchant vessel Manx northeast of Scotland at 0221 hours; only six men survived.
9 Jan 1941
- US Navy transport William Ward Burrows arrived at Wake Island with the first group of 80 civilian workers who would start to excavate the channel between Wilkes and Wake Islands.
- Australian 6th Division and British 7th Armoured Division completed the encirclement of Tobruk, Libya. 25,000 Italian troops were now trapped.
» In-depth article - Escort duties for the British Excess convoy was passed from Force H (from Gibraltar) to the Mediterranean Fleet (from Alexandria, Egypt). Most of Force H turned back for Gibraltar at nightfall, but cruiser HMS Bonaventure and destroyers HMS Hereward, HMS Jaguar, HMS Hasty, and HMS Hero would remain with the convoy.

- At 1500 hours, the main offensive against Bataan defences at the Philippine Islands began, spearheaded by 6,500 men of the newly arrived and inexperienced 65th Infantry Brigade (which replaced the veteran Japanese 48th Division); the first attacks at the Abucay-Mauban defensive line were repelled by US-Filipino troops. Meanwhile, US Marines from Batteries A and C of 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment who remained on Bataan under naval control were integrated into a naval battalion for ground combat.

- In the early afternoon, Czech prisoner Georg Zahradka or Zacharatka escaped from Auschwitz I concentration camp, but was captured by midnight near watchtower 26. He was executed on 14 Jan 1943.
