- General Freyberg's British and New Zealand troops occupied all of Crete.

- German destroyers Galster, Lody, and Beitzen departed from Brest, France and raided British shipping off southern England, United Kingdom. British tug Aid, Free French tug Abeille, and British barge BHC10 were attacked and sunk. Royal Navy destroyers HMS Javelin, HMS Jersey, HMS Jackal, HMS Jupiter, and HMS Kashmir intercepted the raiders and engaged in combat 20 miles south of the Lizard peninsula in Cornwall; HMS Javelin was sunk by two torpedoes from Lody (46 killed), but she was successfully towed to Devonport for repairs. The Germans suffered no casualties.
- New Zealand cruiser HMNZS Leander bombarded a factory and a radio station at Banda Alulu, Italian Somaliland at 1038 hours. Italian aircraft counterattacked without success.
- Italian submarine Delfino attacked Greek destroyer Spetsai south of Piraeus near Athens, Greece, without success.
- British minesweeping trawler HMT Calverton hit a mine and sank in the mouth of the Humber Estuary in England, United Kingdom, killing 2.

- US Navy river gunboats Luzon and Oahu departed Shanghai, China for Manila, Philippine Islands.
- Operation Crusader: Italian Ariete Division overran the New Zealand 21st Battalion at Point 175 in Libya.

Meanwhile, British Royal Navy Force B (cruiser HMS Ajax, cruiser HMS Neptune, destroyer HMS Kimberly, and destroyer HMS Kingston) under the command of Rear Admiral Bernard Rawlings arrived in Malta.

- Air Vice Marshal J. O. Andrews became the commanding officer of the No. 12 Group RAF.
- The United States began to ration coffee.
- Despite serious wounds, RAF Pilot Officer Ron Middleton flew his Stirling bomber back from Turin allowing four crewmen to bale out over Kent before he ran out of fuel. Knowing he could not land and anxious to avoid civilian casualties, he turned the aircraft towards the coast and went into the English Channel with two seriously wounded crewmen still on board. Their bodies were recovered on the next day but Middleton's was not found until it is washed up on the coast in the following February. He was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.
- The Soviet Transcaucasus Front launched an offensive against the Germans along the Terek River in the Caucasus region in southern Russia; it was to be halted within days.

Many were trapped in the holds and drowned, but others take to the water. A Japanese minesweeper in escort picked up nearly 300 of its own nationals but left between 200 and 250 Allied prisoners threshing in the sea. The minesweeper then began shooting the defenceless swimmers. Of the 549 British and Dutch prisoners, there was only one survivor, Kenneth Thomas, who was picked up twenty-four hours later by an Australian ship.
