PUT A TIGER IN YOUR TANK:

The Curtiss P-40 will always be remembered by its
Shark mouth, as the aircraft used by the AVG
in China. Allied Countries besides the USAAF, Australia, Canada, Nationalist China, England, South Africa, Soviet Union and New Zealand.

The P-40 was also used by Brazil until retired in 1954. Turkey, Egypt, Soviet Union used them until 1949, Imperial Japanese Army Air Force during WWII and the Netherlands until 1950 replaced by the P-51 Mustang.

FLYING TIGERS: EVERY MAN A TIGER

The sharksmouth was used on RAF No 112 Squadron P-40 Tomahawks in the Western desert, and was later picked up by the AVG, and used on their P-40s the rest is history.

After the AVG was absorbed into the USAAF in 1942 and was now the 23rd Fighter Squadron most of the original personnel once assigned to the AVG rotated back to the US, or transferred to other commands the replacement pilots assigned to 23rd FG called themselves "Flying Tigers" the sharkmouth was picked up by RCAF, USAAF, RAF and SAAF.

I think thil photo is later than 1040 bacause this version of Warhawk P40E (air intake over engine is longer then in earliest versions)were used from 1941/1942 ( in december 1941 even in USAF on hawai and philiphines most od P40 were P40 B)
