    BATTLE FOR GUADALCANAL:

THE AIRFIELD WAS BUILT BY THE JAPANESE AND LATER CAPTURED BY THE US MARINES.
THE AIR STRIP LATER NAMED HENDERSON FIELD IN HONOR OF MARINE MAJOR LOFTON HENDERSON, WHO WAS THE COMMANDING OFFICER OF(VMSB-241)KILLED IN ACTION DURING THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY JUNE 1942.

AFTER WWII THE AIRFIELD WAS ABANDONED, LATER IT WAS REOPENED IN THE 1960s, AS THE SOLOMAN'S MAIN AIRPORT.
