New book on Battle of Surigao Strait available

14 May 2009

The new book Battle of Surigao Strait, written by Anthony P. Tully, is now available! The Battle of Surigao Strait was one of four major actions that comprise the larger grand naval battle known collectively as the Battle of Leyte Gulf in late October 1944. It was the last battleship-to-battleship engagement of WW2, and may ultimately prove to be the very last time such an action will take place in naval history. Tony pulled together all of the existing documentary material and discovered new accounts, thus this book contains a significant amount of new information about the battle. You can learn more about the book at the official website of the book Battle of Surigao Strait.

Tony is one of the main players at CombinedFleet.com, which is a partner site to WW2DB. With Jonathan Parshall, he co-authored the bestselling and authoritative Shattered Sword: The Untold Story of the Battle of Midway. Together with Jonathan Parshall and David Dickson, Tony also identified underwater remains of the Japanese aircraft carrier Kaga in 2000, which was first aired in a Discovery Channel special "The Search for the Japanese Fleet" in December 2000.

"Reference to sources previously unexplored in the West puts that chapter of the great series of battles known collectively as the Battle of Leyte Gulf in a new light. Tully has examined the battle from the Japanese side with newly translated documents and challenges what has been depicted as a sort of 'Charge of the Light Brigade.' A must read for students of the Leyte Gulf fight."

W.D. Dickson
Author of Battle of the Philippine Sea, June 1944
