Taijiro Aoki graduated from the Imperial Naval Academy at Etajima in 1910. At the start of the Pacific War, he was the commanding officer of the Naval Aviation School at Tsuchiura. In Apr 1942, he was commissioned command of the carrier Akagi, and took her to the Battle of Midway. During that battle, a bomb from an American dive bombers started a fire in the after elevator which sparked off armed aircraft inside the hangar. The damage was deemed beyond repair, and as a result she was scuttled by a Japanese destroyer the next morning. Akagi was the first Japanese capital ship in WW2 to be scuttled by own ships. After Midway, Aoki became the commanding officer of the Kure Naval Arsenal. He retired from active service in Oct 1942.
After the war, Aoki was interrogated by Captain C. Shands of the United States Navy on 9 Oct 1945 in Tokyo.
