ww2dbaseThe Johnson light machine guns were designed by attorney and United States Marine Corps Reserve Captain Melvin Johnson, Jr. in the late 1930s. Each of these weapons were fed by a curved 20-round magazine on the left side, and they could be adjusted to fire between 200 rounds per minute and 900 rounds per minute. Two variants were made, Model 1941 and Model 1944; the former had wooden stocks and metal bipods, and the latter had tubular steel butts and wooden monopods. A small number of them were sold to the United States Army, United States Marine Corps, Canadian Army (via the US-Canadian joint First Special Service Force), Philippine Army, and the Philippine Constabulary during the the war. They continued to see action after WW2, for example the 1946-1954 Hukbalahap Rebellion in the Philippines, the Korean War (by means of the Philippine Expeditionary Forces to Korea), and the 1953-1959 Cuban Revolution.

Between 1941 and 1949 (when Johnson Automatics, Incorporated went out of business), 9,500 examples were built.
