  • US Marine Corps squadron VMF-214, flying Corsair fighters, provided top cover for another squadron's strafing mission against the Japanese anchorage at Faisi, Shortland Islands, Solomon Islands.   • Two divisions of US Marine Corps squadron VMF-214 and two divisions of US Marine Corps squadron VMF-221 escorted a P-38 reconnaissance aircraft over the Shortland Islands. The 16 Corsair fighters shot down five Japanese aircraft, losing one (Bill Blakeslee). ww2dbase [Shortland Islands | CPC]
