  • Abdul Hafiz of Indian 9th Jat Infantry Regiment led an attack by two sections of a platoon against a Japanese-held hill near Imphal, India. Despite being injured in the leg by enemy fire, he took out one machine position and led an attack on another; during the latter, he was fatally shot in the chest. He was awarded the Victoria Cross medal posthumously on 27 Jul, which was given to his widow Jugri Begum by Viceroy of India Archibald Wavell in Oct 1944 in Delhi, India. ww2dbase [Imphal, Manipur | CPC]
