• British Royal Navy Commander Anthony C.C. Miers was awarded the Victoria Cross for valour when commanding HM submarine Torbay in a daring and successful raid on shipping in an enemy harbour in Greece. ww2dbase [AC]

• USS S-31 departed Dutch Harbor, US Territory of Alaska for her third war patrol. ww2dbase [S-31 | Unalaska | CPC]

• German submarine U-457 sank abandoned British fleet oiler RFA Alderdale of Allied convoy PQ-17 with her deck gun in the Barents Sea. In the same area, U-355 sank British ship Hartlebury (8 were killed, 52 survived, but only 20 would remain alive before being rescued) also of PQ-17. • USS S-38 arrived at Brisbane, Australia, ending her fifth war patrol. ww2dbase [S-38 | Brisbane, Queensland | CPC]

• Erling Nielsen, master of Norwegian merchant steamer Hero which was sunk by German submarine U-375 on the previous day, was given a military burial at the Ramleh Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery outside Jaffa, Palestine. Hero had been in British Admiralty service at the time of its sinking. The burial was attended by Hero's 1st Mate Fredriksen, Hero's 1st Engineer Olsen, Hero's 3rd Engineer Abrahamsen, as well as the Norwegian Consul in Haifa. ww2dbase [Ramla | HM]

• As units of the German 4.Panzerarmee entered Voronezh, Russia, the Soviet Stavka created the Voronezh Front under General Konstantin Rokossovsky to fill the gap between the Southwest Front and the Bryansk Front. ww2dbase [Caucasus Campaign | Voronezh | TH]

• German submarine U-571 sank British ship Umtata, in tow by US tug Edmund J. Moran, 10 miles off Miami, Florida, United States at 0900 hours; all 92 aboard survived. ww2dbase [Second Happy Time | Miami, Florida | CPC]
• In an effort to make more new B-29 bombers available for operational use for the US Army, the US Navy canceled its orders for such aircraft for research purposes. Instead, the US Navy will received a number of existing B-24, B-25, and B-34 aircraft from the US Army. ww2dbase [CPC]
