On August 23 1944 just before dawn and sunrise, Tennessee had a steering casualty that caused a collision with California. They were about 100 miles southeast of San Cristobal and 330 niles NNW of Espititu Santo in the Coral Sea. Both ships returned independently to Espiritu Santo, both arriving August 24 with California entering the dock that evening and staying there until September 11. Tennessee finished repairs from a repair ship about September 1. Both ships would join TF 77.2 on October 10 and be involved in the battle line at Surigao Strait on October 24-25.
