When Stalin travelled from Moscow to the Potsdam Conference in July 1945, he made the 1,923 km journey in a convoy of up to eight armoured trains. One reason for this was his fear of flying, the other being his fear of assassination by anti-Soviet partisans in Ukraine, Belorussia and Poland.
