At 6 p.m. on 17 September 1939 the aircraft carrier HMS Courageous (Capt. W.T. Makeig-Jones) was torpedoed by U-29 (Lieutenant-Commander Schuhardt) and sank South-West of Ireland with her captain and 518 of nearly half of her ship’s company. Captain Makeig-Jones was last seen remaining on his bridge alone, saluting the flag as Courageous capsized and went down.
