Part of the reason this photo was taken was that Lt Thies piloted the plane that discovered the crash site of Tadayoshi Koga’s A6M Zero fighter on Akutan Island on 10 Jul 1942. The discovery, recovery, and analysis of the Akutan Zero was considered (by some) to be one of the biggest intelligence victories of the Pacific Theater.

Part of the reason this photo was taken was that Lt Thies piloted the plane that discovered the crash site of Tadayoshi Koga’s A6M Zero fighter on Akutan Island on 10 Jul 1942. The discovery, recovery, and analysis of the Akutan Zero was considered (by some) to be one of the biggest intelligence victories of the Pacific Theater.
