ww2dbaseConstantin Sănătescu was a former military attaché to Paris and London who left the military at the rank of general. In 1937, he was Romania's Deputy Chief of the General Staff, and was given the responsibility of establishing a new government after Ion Antonescu was overthrown. He supported Romania's switch from the Axis to the Allies, and attempted rather ineffectively to get closer to the United States to prevent a Communist takeover. He resigned on 2 Dec 1944 under Russian pressure.
