ww2dbaseHans-Joachim Eberhard Kuehn was the son of amateur German spy Bernard Kuehn, who was sent by German Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels to US Territory of Hawaii to assist the Japanese in gathering intelligence in Honolulu. Although he was only 11 years old in 1941, he was nevertheless trained to ask friendly US Navy sailors apparently innocent questions about the layout and movement of warships. When his family was arrested in Feb 1942, he was taken in by Dr. Bernhard Hormann of the University of Hawaii, who looked after him until his family was freed after the war. He was deported back to Germany in 1948.

On December 7, 1941 I was 12 years, 7 months and 1 week old living with my parents and younger brother, age 10 and 1/2 on Keeaumoku Street in Honolulu, HI. While not remembering specifically what age I was when our parents introduced us to the Kuhn family, my father, a German Jewish naturalised American surgeon superficially had much in common with the Kuhn family and became family friends. I clearly remember the family. Otto the father, the mother whose name was recalled by me after reading about the Kuhn family recently and their 3 offspring, Ruth (infrequently around the home as I recall) who must have been about 20 or so, Eberhard who was about 3-4 years older than I and became a very good high school miler by 1944 and/or 1945 at Punahou Academy, and a younger brother who must have been 8-10 and was well remembered by the name "Beepchin" (Spelling ?) a frail little boy with a rather severe appearing skin rash. In short I remember the family well as it lived in Kailua on Oahu. The main reason for my documenting my knowledge of the family is to be able to critique most of the articles etc. as found on the internet including the wikipedia entry updated in November 2015. There are significant errors and contradictions and misinformation in all of the substantive entries. I would be happy to correspond with anyone regarding my experiences regarding this family or offspring.
