U-575 Operational Timeline

1 Dec 1941 German submarine U-575 (Kapitänleutnant Günther Heydemann) spotted the unescorted and unarmed 7,542-ton steam tanker Astral at 1700 hours. Astral was carrying 78,200 barrels of gasoline and kerosene. U-575 tracked Astral until 2057 hours when Heydemann discovered a painted American flag on the side of the tanker. Heydemann did not realize that fellow submarine captain Wolfgang Lüth of U-43 had also been tracking the same American tanker.
