ww2dbaseThe Type 96 15 cm Howitzer field guns were the result of a long series of research that dated back to the 1920s. The design largely finished in 1934, but Japanese Army Chief of Staff Kazushige Ugaki insisted that further enhancements must be completed before the design entered production. The first production example was built in 1937; between 1937 and 1945, 440 of them were built. These weapons were mounted on rubber-shod wooden wheels, and were usually towed by tractors. They first saw combat during the Second Sino-Japanese War, and subsequently saw action during the Nomonhan Incident, the Japanese invasion of the Philippine Islands, the Guadalcanal Campaign, and the Okinawa Campaign.
