ww2dbaseThe 12.8 cm FlaK 40 anti-aircraft guns were designed by the manufacturing firm Rheinmetall-Borsig in 1936 as the intended replacement for the 88-millimeter anti-tank and anti-aircraft guns, though both weapons were used even after the 12.8 cm FlaK 40 design's introduction. The first prototype gun was delivered in late 1937, and the final design entered production in 1942 as heavy stationary anti-aircraft weapons. When production ceased in Aug 1944, 450 were built; about 250 of them were installed in anti-aircraft towers, while the remaining about 200 examples were mounted on rail cars for limited mobility.
