The Pacific: Episode 3

Episode 3 finds the guys from the 1st Marine Division in transition. It follows Robert Leckie mostly, off the boat in Australia and into the bed of a local woman. The romance between the two is, of course, sexual (it’s HBO…) and a little graphic. I expected a little of this, since there was a bit of this at the end of Band of Brothers with the Janovic character. Yet with the Sid Phillips romance covered later in the episode, the details shown are on the innocent side of things (some kissing and a little hugging) and it balanced the romance angle well enough.

We also see Basilone receive his Medal of Honor and then get shipped to the states to aid in the war bond drives. We see the guys go off on a 100 mile march, pop nasty blisters, get drunk, get in trouble, get prompted, and finally, get back on the ship. It was an episode with a little of everything. A definite transition piece moving toward more action later on.

And no Eugene Sledge. I’m pretty sure he’s on the horizon. Still time to read this review of With the Old Breed, or to get his book and finish it up.
