Grumman Avenger

It’s funny how subjects for writing sometimes find you. I tell my students this from time to time, but they never really believe me. Here’s how it worked for this post.

The other day I inadvertently deleted a folder on my desktop that contained a few pictures, about 100 or so, and in the bunch were snaps of a recent kid birthday party.

Ouch.

So I did what any good father would do: I didn’t tell anybody and I got to work data mining my hard drive for the deleted images. I was able to recover most of what I lost thanks to some handy data recovery software, and among the images, I also found this little gem. I took this picture at the Smithsonian Air and Space museum in DC some time ago. For whatever reason, I deleted it. The exhibit features a model of a Grumman Avenger and two pictures. One is of the plane in flight and the other (on the right) features the crew. CMDR William I. Martin and crew is the caption.

It’s a nice package, interspersed in-between other bits of history in the museum. You can find this display in the World War II section, top floor, near the aircraft carrier bridge.
