This is a nice photo; I’m glad the Smithsonian is paying appropriate homage to this fine warbird.
The photo in the photo shows TBF/TBM Avengers in flight between May 1942 and Feb 1943, according to the National Insignia on the wings. The red disc in the center of the star was removed in May 1942 and the National Insignia on the upper right wing was removed in Feb 1943. The National Insignia on the model suggests a TBF-1C in service Sep 1943 or later. The lack of Identification Letters/Numerals suggests a stateside training assignment (although fuselage markings – if any – are not visible).
