Cherchell Conference

21 Oct 1942 - 22 Oct 1942

Contributor:

ww2dbaseOn the night of 21-22 Oct 1942, American Major General Mark Clark arrived at Cherchell, Algeria by submarine to conduct a secret conference with Vichy French commander Charles Mast. Pro-Allies, Mast promised Clark that when the Allies invade Vichy French territory in North Africa, his troops would not oppose the landings. When Operation Torch was launched on 8 Nov 1942, Mast upheld his promise and gave the order "[d]o not oppose but assist the American landings".
