ww2dbaseThe Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic was formed when the Transcaucasian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic was disbanded in 1936. By that time, Azerbaijan had already been an important oil producer for the Soviet Union, having supplied more than half of USSR's annual oil demands through the 1930s; in 1941, oil fields in Azerbaijan produced 25,400,000 tons of oil. In mid-1941, Germany invaded the Soviet Union, and the mid-1942 operation Fall Blau (Case Blue) targeted this oil-rich region; German troops would never reach the borders of Azerbaijan, however. In addition to oil, the country also provided the Soviet Union with large supplies of natural gas and tea. During the war, somewhere between 600,000 and 800,000 Azerbaijanis fought for the Soviet military forces; depending on source, somewhere between 200,000 and 400,000 were killed in the conflict. After the war, Azerbaijan remained under Soviet control until the new Republic of Azerbaijan became independent in 1991.
