ww2dbaseKirghizia was originally formed as Kirghiz Autonomous Socialist Soviet Republic in Feb 1926 and was given status as a nominally independent republic of the Soviet Union in 1936. During the purges of the 1930s and during the German conquests of the late 1930s and early 1940s, more than 20,000 Russian, Polish, and Ukrainian Jews fled to Kirghizia; included in this group was the Jewish Theater Company of Warsaw, which performed in Kirghizia between 1939 and 1945. Kirghiz Soviet Socialist Republic remained a part of the USSR until the formation of Kyrgyz Republic, commonly known as Kyrgyzstan, in Dec 1991.
