Dutch East Indies
  • Regional military commanders in Indonesia met in Yogyakarta and elected Jendral Sudirman as the overall commander of the Indonesian Army. Sudirman was a former officer in the war-time Japanese-sponsored Peta militia. Sudirman, who was a better politician than he was an officer, retained his predecessor Oerip Sumohardjo as his chief of staff in charge of army operations.
