ww2dbaseTaihoku Prisoner of War Camp No. 6 was established just north of Taihoku (now Taipei) city proper in northern Taipei after the start of the Pacific War. It was initially populated by prisoners of war formerly of the 5th Field Regiment of the British Royal Artillery and 9th Regiment of Indian 11th Division. They were transferred, aboard England Maru, from Singapore; these POWs were paraded through Taihoku as a show of strength for the colonial subjects. Manpower of Taihoku POW Camp No. 6 was employed for farming, bus repair, and rail repair. In the final year of the war, this camp was used as a transit camp for POWs of various Allied nations being moved to camps in Japan and northeastern China. During the war, the population of the camp was about 500 at any given time, and a total of 74 prisoners died in captivity. The camp ceased operations at the close of the Pacific War. The camp facilities were demolished some time after the war, and today the site is part of the Republic of China Ministry of National Defense headquarters complex.
