Scharnhorst as originally commissioned in 1937. The straight bows were then given a forward sheer and a clipper rake just prior to World War II. This gave the ship an improved performance in rough seas.

The thick belt armor is clearly evident here; I prefer to think of these ships as battleships rather than battlecruisers for this reason.
Also note original straight stem and mainmast.
