This was a formation put together for publicity while the heads of the various units had meetings. KGV had Vice Admiral Rawlings (Commander British Fleet), Missouri had Vice Admiral Halsey (Commander Third Fleet), and the carriers belonged to TG 38.4 with Vice Admiral McCain in Shangri-La (Commander TF 38), Rear Admiral Radford in Yorktown (Commander TG 38.4) and Wasp. The far carrier is probably Shangri-La, with the picture taken from Wasp or Yorktown, though Bon Homme Richard was also in TG 38.4.

The group was 300 miles southeast of Tokyo after having moved away from the Japanese coast on request made August 14 by Japanese authorities to not tempt incidents.
