These TBM-3's were part of VT-83 and
the SB2-C's were with VB-83, flying off the USS Essex (CV-9) [TF-38.3]

BOMBS AWAY!

Both the TBMs in foreground, and the SB2Cs in the background are identified by the white diamond insigina on the tails, looks like there dropping 500lb GP General Purpose bombs.

TARGET FOR TODAY:

July 1945 US Carrier-based aircraft attacked
the Japanese city of Hakodate located on the
Northern Island of Hakkaido.
Hakodate was one of the few remaining supply
and industrial targets, and one of the few areas left producing food supplies.
These targets were too far north for B-29s,
US Carriers provided a tactical option to carry out attacks.
Docks, Ships, Harbor Facilities, Factories and Storage Yards were bombed. The Island of Hakkaido, was cut off from the rest of the Empire, one month later, August 1945, the war was over.
