The sailor being committed to the deep was Radioman 3rd-class Julius Thomas Petrella who was actually killed by friendly fire. After Spencer’s depth charges forced U-175 to the surface, Spencer made a run toward the submarine with guns firing. US Coast Guard cutter Duane was also shooting at the sub. Then the gun crew on one of the armed transports opened fire at the sub but hit the Spencer instead. RM3c Petrella was killed and several were wounded.
