My grandfather was there that historic day as part of the Tokyo Bay Occupation Force (TF-31) Marine garrison that secured the HIJMS Nagato which was part of the surrender of the Japanese Navy. Hard to believe that was 65 years ago.

My Dad was on the Cowpens in Japan Harbor to protect the Missouri during the signing of the surrender on Sept 2, 1945. Aboard the Cowpens was also the Fighter Aircraft Director who was in charge of all fighter aircraft. During the signing there were 1600 planes in the air over Tokyo and the Bay. He said Gen. McArthur was in Australia, and they had to wait in the harbor until he arrived for the signing. My Dad was a Senior Lieutenant and the Radar Maintenance Officer at the end of the war. He says that was an extremely happy day. He will be 99 this September and doing well.

The true end of a horrific tragedy by any standard and one that could have been avoided if both sides in the Pacific had taken certain steps. Now the long road of healing could begin. To quote MacArthur's last words on this conflict "These proceedings are now closed."
