** MEMBERS OF THE GREATEST GENERATION **
L to R Lt. Charles l. McClure, Lt. Ted L. Lawson, Lt. Robert S. Clever, Lt. Dean Davenport, Sgt. David J. Thatcher
MOVIE OF INTEREST: THE 1944 WORLD WAR II FILM THIRTY SECONDS OVER TOKYO
Spencer Tracy, Van Johnson, Robert Walker the movie tells the story of the Doolittle Raid over
Japan. To add to the realism of the film. a real fire was taking place as the B-25s flew past the tank farm.
San Diego stood in for Japanese cities, the sound
stage real B-25s for the carrier takeoff shots. The real stars were the North American B-25s

This is Doolittle Crew #7 (seventh to fly off Hornet). L to R they are: Lt Charles L McClure (Navigator), Lt Ted W Lawson (Pilot), Lt Robert S Clever (Bombardier), Lt Dean Davenport (Co-Pilot), Sgt David J Thatcher (Engineer/Gunner). All survived the mission after ditching near the Chinese coast, although Lt Lawson had one leg amputated while still in China. Lt Clever was killed in an aviation accident in Ohio six months after the mission but the other four survived the war. Ted Lawson wrote the famous book Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo that also became a successful movie.
