1st Lt. 1st. Bn. 7th Marines 1st. Mar. Div. William McKinley Fleming KIA. Jan.10th 1944. New Britain. Was a New Yorker and my Dad's best friend. Both enlisted in 31 and my Dad CWO, went from 1st Div. to 3rd. Was at Boug, Guam and Iwo. Have old photo of 1st. Div. Fleet Mar. Force, taken by Griffith News. Have letter he sent Dec.23 1943 to my Father.

Chesty Puller was indeed the battalion commander and not the Executive Officer Mr. Stubblebine.He commander at Guadalcanal prior and was promoted to commander of the 1st Regiment while on Cape Gloucester.

Puller was named commander of the 7th Marines at the end of February 1944, not until after this photo was taken. He was still the XO until then.
