The Aichi D3A (Val) was the first Japanese combat aircraft to drop a bomb over Pearl Harbor 12/4/41
129 D3A1s made up the attacking dive bomber force over Pearl.
Like most Japanese aircraft, the (Val) didn't have any protective armor for engine, fuel or crew.
Later Allied pilots found the Val to be an easy target. The Japanese produced about 1500 D3A1s and D3A2s dive bombers.
Surviving Val's were later used in kamikaze attacks against the US Fleet.

Photograph shows one of the D3A1 (Val's) that were shot down by anti-aircraft fire during the second wave attack. The Val was very vulnerable to fire.
