Sharkmouth markings were a feature of the Mustangs of the 12th FBS, 18th FBG at Chinhae AB. While the Mustang was more manoeuvrable and had greater endurance than the F-80 (at least until wingtip tanks were developed for the latter) many airmen were unenthustastic about its use as a fighter bomber - considering the liquid cooled engine as being too vulnerable to ground fire during low level sorties in Korea. For a while consideration was given to re-equipping with air-cooled F-47N Thunderbolts. but the USAF no longer had enough Thunderbolts on its inventory, and so the Mustangs were compelled to continue fighter-bombers operations in Korea for over 2.1/2 years.
