Aichi(Val)Dive Bomber AI-208 from Carrier
Akagi.
Object on right wing, is gun camera, this was
also an aid in pre-war training.

Aichi D3A Type 99 Dive Bomber carried a
type 98 high explosive bomb of 550lb the
bomb case was made from welded and riveted
construction, with a cast steel nose able
to penetrate up to 400mm of reinforced
concrete.

Designed in 1937 and put into service in
1938. This weapon was used at the Battle of
Midway in June, 1942. 500 D3A1's and 1,000 D3A2'2 were built.

Armament:
2x7.7mm machine-guns in the engine cowling
1x7.7mm machine-gun for the radio operator/
gunner.

Bomb-load:
One 250kg(500lb.) bomb under the fuselage and
two 60kg/132lb bombs under the wings.
During the last year of the war, the D3A was used for kamikaze sorties

The Val was in service with the Imperial Navy
and took part in the Pearl Harbor attack and many of the carrier operations afterward.
Replaced by the D3A Model 22, that appeared in June 1942 and started to replace the older Model 11s in front-line units that year.
Most of the older Model 11s, were sent to training schools, surviving aircraft were later used in Kamikaze missions.
