The official Navy caption reads: “Preparing to launch an OS2U from USS Mobile, October 1943” but the two officers and enlisted man directly next to the catapult rail suggests things are still a few moments away from actually launching, despite the running engine on the aircraft. The two officers casually standing there with the bluejacket on his knees apparently holding some tools further suggests that something minor has gone wrong with the catapult and the machinist mate is there to actually fix it while the officers are there to stand nearby and discuss fixing it.
