Fine air-to-air photograph of a Mitsubishi A5M4 (Claude) of 14th Kokutai flown by Lt. Mitsugu Kokufuda serving in China. Aircraft is overall natural metal, with red tail and horizontal stabilizers.
Stripes and numbers on tail are in white, stripe on fuselage is red/white identification marking Japanese letters and number 278 are black.
At the start of the Pacific war, the Imperial Navy still had a few hundred on inventory half were assigned to training units and two hundred assigned to front-line units serving until being replaced by the Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter.
