Special thanks to David Way of the Battleship Iowa Museum in Long Beach, California for submitting this photo. It is a very interesting photo all by itself but it has a backstory that is just as interesting. This photo was censored for years, along with all the other photos that showed evidence of Franklin Roosevelt’s disability. This photo was chosen for censorship because it shows the two temporary elevators installed off Iowa’s Captain’s Cabin, where President Roosevelt stayed, so the president could move between decks. These elevators were added just for FDR’s ocean transit to and from Africa for the Tehran Conference and removed once he returned. The elevators are enclosed in canvas and they look like two little skyscrapers on the side of the superstructure abreast the main mast. Note that the ships is just sliding into her anchoring berth and they are already lowering one of the whaleboats. A short time after this photo was taken, FDR was taken ashore in a whaleboat from the other side of the ship. Nothing is known about the aircraft from which this photo was taken.

Note the French cruiser Jeanne d'Arc beyond Iowa. She has an American cargo ship alongside delivering anti-aircraft guns.
