In looking more closely at the whaleboats, I just noticed that some of the boats' abbreviated names can be made out... 'COLO' for Colorado, 'OKLA' for Oklahoma, 'CAL' for California. Toward the center back of the whaleboat group is what looks like 'MD' for Maryland, but did they use two-letter abbreviations for single-name states--and their namesake battleships--back then? (Two-name states like the Dakotas, the Carolinas, and West Virginia I suppose would have done so.)
Finally, I wonder which team won?

I believe that battleship is actually the Nevada... you can just barely make out her name on the stern (in the full size view).
