Note the diagonal fore-to-aft single white stripe tail geometric identifying the aircraft as part of Bombing Squadron 80 flying from the Hancock. Note also the white paint overspray on both sides of the corresponding geometric stripe on the starboard wingtip. This due to a hasty job of masking the area to be painted. These squadron aircraft, along with the aircraft for Hancock’s Fighting Squadron and Torpedo Squadron, were left aboard the Hancock when Air Group 7 rotated back to the United States in late Jan 1945 and Air Group 80 was transferred to the Hancock from the recently damaged USS Ticonderoga. Air Group 80 only remained aboard Hancock for the month of Feb 1945 until they themselves were rotated back to the United States. Air Group 6 then came aboard Hancock and inherited the same planes, eventually marking the planes with their own tail geometric.
