The small British union flag on the front of Montgomery’s car at Leigh-Mallory’s elbow flew from the front of every car he rode in from the Normandy landings until the end of the war. At war’s end, he signed his name to the pennant and presented it to his staff photographer, Sgt John Morris. Morris kept the pennant and it remains a family memento to this day.
