This Mark 24 was dropped by US Navy Lieutenant Commander Howard Avery flying a TBF Avenger from USS Card and this photo was taken by Avery’s radioman, ARM2c Henry Shirley. The Mark 24 was dropped just ahead of the swirl left by the diving German submarine U-402. A shock wave and bulging on the surface was then observed, followed by a large oil slick, and U-402 was lost with all 50 hands. For this action, LtCdr Avery would be awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.
