Note Clark’s decorations including seven World War II Pacific Theater battle stars and Thailand’s Order of the White Elephant around his neck. His ribbons for the Navy Cross, the Navy Distinguished Service Medal, and the Legion of Merit with Combat ‘V’ are partially hidden beneath his jacket lapel. This is the only photograph I have ever seen showing a US Navy officer wearing a bow tie while wearing a dress blue uniform jacket (other than mess dress). Clark’s reasons for this are unknown.
