This aircraft was P-38L #44-23991 of the 73rd Fighter Squadron based on Saipan. Nine USAAF fighters were assigned to escort 3 Navy PB4Y Liberators of Photographic Squadron VD-5 from Guam on a reconnaissance flight over Truk Lagoon. Before reaching Truk, Lt. DeVona radioed he was turning back with one engine out. PB4Y “Heavenly Lambchop” piloted by H.L. Sayler followed DeVona to aid with navigation. DeVona then radioed his second engine had gone out and he was preparing to bail out. D.P. Parks aboard “Heavenly Lambchop” took this photo at about that time. DeVona bailed out and managed to get into his life raft. Sayler circled the area for nine hours until the destroyer USS Bailey arrived and picked DeVona up, uninjured.
