Captain Williams and Mrs. Woodfork had just left the White House after the ceremony where President Bill Clinton presented a posthumous Medal of Honor to Staff Sergeant Ruben Rivers and six other African-American soldiers from World War II. Captain Williams had been the commanding officer of Company A, 761st Tank Battalion and Sergeant Rivers’ commanding officer. Williams had recommended Rivers for the Medal of Honor in Nov 1944 but the application was ignored for many years. Williams continued to advocate for Rivers’ medal up through and including this ceremony at the White House. Mrs. Woodfork is seen in this photo holding the presentation case for her brother’s Medal of Honor.
